Constructed in 1571, during the period of Spain's colonization of the Philippines, it comprised of European buildings and churches that have been replicated in different parts of the archipelago. Although the Pacific War of the 1940s took its toll on Intramuros, it had been one of the world's best preserved medieval cities. Among the many displays, the galleries devoted to the San Diego galleon merit special mention. Porcelain plates, coins, jewelry, armaments and other artifacts recovered from the sunken battleship present revelatory glimpses of seventeenth century life. The Story of the Filipino People is also an important attraction for visitors.
